RECRUITING FOR THE REINFORCEMENTS.
» STATEMENT BY THE MINISTER. (PRISS ASSOCIATION TELZGRAU.) WELLINGTON, September 27. The Defencc Minister (the Hon. James Allen) stated to-night that he had no doubt that tho 0000 men required for tho Ninth Reinforcements and tho two extra battalions ivould be ready to go into camp in the middle of October. Apparently there would be a surplus in some branches to carry forward to thb November drafts. Tho list of men passed for service up to September 13th, had shown an infantry shortago of G39 men on tho requirements for the Ninth Reinforcements and the extra battalions, but 883 men had been awaiting medical examination at that time. The call now was for men for the Tenth Reinforcements to go into camp early in November. _ Infantry, and mounted infantry especially, were wanted for that force. The Minister mentioned in connexion with recruiting that he had been thinking of communicating with the National Reserve, the various patriotic societies, and the mayors of cities and boroughs, with a view to securing their co-opera-tion in an appeal to the men. He did not want to overdo the matter at that stage, but men were wanted in large numbers. The request of the Defence Department was that the men would register, and then remain in their employment until they were called up.
