Hamilton, R.N., has boon awarded tho Distinguished Service Order'for transporting -aj naval gun 160 miles up the river Niger, 480 miles im the Benuc river, 1 , ana sixty miles overland. This feat ' largelycontributed to tho surrender of Garua, in the Cameroous. . - Lieutenant Louis Henry Koppel t Hamilton, who is -3 of age, entered tho Royal Navy in 1905, and on completion of his training as a -cadet ! ' •- was awarded the King's Medal. [Promoted lieutenant on June 30th, 1913, Lieutenant Hamilton was appointed a few months later to H.M.S. '• Cumberland, training ship for naval cadets, in wnich he served until Decem- . ber 4th, 1914. when he was appointed to H.MJS. Challenger, which was engaged in operations on the coasts of r " Tpgoland and the Cameroons. The Bonuo river flows into the Niger "about 200 miles from the" mouth of tho ■J- latter river, of which it is the most important tributary. After leaving his J slirp some distance up the Niger, lieutenant Hamilton, jn command of his'party, steamed 840 miles to the frontier of the Cameroons, and thence j/ - proceeded overland to Garua, which fies about aixiy miles to the eastward on the north bank of the Benue river.
