STREET LIGHTING.
STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR
The statement" made by Mr Ceo. Soott. chairman of the Heathcote County Council, at a meeting at at. Martins on Thursday regarding the comparative cost of street lighting by yas and by electricity was commented on vosterday by the Mayor (Mr H. Hoiland).
Referring to Mr Scott's statement that there' were 3000 electric sxh-t lamps each costing £3, and that .m----total -xjst of those per annum wuuld be'l'SKWO. Mr Holland said that ;:s a matter ol fact there were only ] 140 electric street lumps; 3000, a* the total, had never been before the Electrical' Committee, or authorised by any ol the Council's officers, or even suggested. Mr »Seott had given the total cost of gas last year at £3-100. Xhu present price per gas, lamp was £4 per annum, but tuis figure did not ir.cluJe anything 'or interest Of sinking fund, nor for the cost ol the lamp-post and lantern. . , , Each gas lamp cost the Council about £<J to erect and, approximately; 13s por lump iß'i' annum iequired to be added to the" £4 to. cover the charges mentioned. >o that each gas lamp cost the Council £t 13s per annum without making any allowance for breakages and repairs. Again, the price paid for the pas lamp was for 2000 hours' lighting j>or annum, whereas the electric lamp at £3 per annum, including all charges, gave light for nearly 4000 hours per annum. The electric lamps were of much higher candle-power than the average gas lamp. Altogether, Mr Holland thought, 'Mr Scott had misstated the position.
