INTERNATIONAL PRESS CONGRESS.

—4 (FROM OUR OWN' COnnESPOKBSN'T.) SAN FRANCISCO. July 5. Among recent visitors to Srtn Francisco from New Zealand aro the wellknown journalists, Mr Mark Cohen, of Dunedin, Mr William McCullough, of Thames. Mr Robert Bell, of Ashburton, and Mr Cecil Leys, of Auckland, doleites to the International Press Congress, meeting hero this week in connexion with the Exposition. Mr Cohen, who is noted in tho Dominion for the interest he takes in educational questions, will also attend the Congress devoted to that subject toward tho end of July. Tho New Zealand Pressmen arrived hero by way of Vancouver, Seattle, and Portland. On the Sunday after they reached San Francisco they wero taken by the San Jose Chamber of Commerce on a trip through tho wonderful Santa Clara Valley, one. of the most noted, fruit-growing districts in America. In this valley the prune industry, for instance, is carried on on a scale that was a revelation to tho New Zealanders. There aro somo 53.000 acres devoted to the prune, providing an estimated yield of from 80.000.000 to 90,000,0001b. Tho splendid cultivation of tho Santa Clara orchards was highly appreciated by tho visitors. A circumstance that caused some surprise was that for milo after mile, thc orchards wero entirely unprotected by fencing, in great contrast to New Zealand, where the fruit-growing lands are so jealously guarded. Last Thursday Mr Edmund Clifton arranged a reception at the New Zealand pavilion to permit of the visiting Pressmen meeting the Exposition authorities and other notables. Among those who participated were Mr A. A. Mooro. president of the Exposition; Mr James Rolph. Mayor of San Francisco; Dr. Walter Williams, who will preside over the Press Congress, and Mr Barr, who is director of the Congresses to be held during the Exposition.
