-4 ■ INTERESTING FIGURES. Tho public generally are interested in the subject of tipping on passenger steamers trading to New Zealand. Evidence on the subject was given in the Arbitration Court at ■ Wellington on Friday by tho Union Company's superintendent steward during the hearing of the Cooks and Stewards' Dispute. The witness swore that he had collected information from tho men's books which showed that over a period of nine months the stewards got tips per month per man as follows: — £ c. d. Maungamii ... 3 9 4 Maitai 3 5 0 Monowai ... 3 10 0 . 'Maori G 10 0 Wahine 9 4 0 Pateena ... ... 417 6 : *■ Arahura ... ... 610 0 Omitting the Maori and the Wahine, he said, the average was £4 16s per steward per month. In the cooking department aboard ship the galley hands render down tho fat and sell it for their own benefit. The evidenco of tho witness in question was to the effect that the galley hands sold the fat with tho following financial results on the boats mentioned : —- Mokoia, £17 83 per trip, or £4 7s ?er man. , Maitai, £7 10s per trip, or £1 17e Gd ncr man. Moeraki, £18 per trip, or £4 10s per man. Maungamii,' £32 14s per trip, or £4 13s 6d per man.
