TIMBER' WORKERS* • UNION.,,
The annual meeting of the Canterbury Timbor- Yards, Sawmills, and Coalyards Employees' Union was hold in the Trades Hall on Tueadey evening, Mr J. C. Ralph, vicepreeident; ■in : the i-chair. A circular wae received from Mr L. G." Whitehead; hon. secretary_ of the Workers' Educational Association, inviting the Union to become affiliated to the organisation. It was decided to comply with the, request, and Mr C. F. Meyer was elected delegate. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President: Mr J. TJ. Ralph; vice-presidentsy Meesre C. F. Meyer and T. Purdom; secretary: Mr H. Hunter; aesistant^ecretarj": Mr F. Schrader; treasurer :Mr G. Whiting: executive: Messrs J. Alexander, H. Hill, L. J. Hamilton, It. Brown, T. Clothier, T, Carter, and J. Oliff; trusiecs: Meeers J. "Wright and E. Parlane: auditors: Messrs T. Clothier and T. Carter; delegates to District Council of Social Democratic Party: Messrs J. C. Ralph and C. F. "Meyer; delegates to annual conference: Messrs J.-C. Ralph and C. F. Moyer, and H. Hunter (general secretary). It was resolved that a smoko social be held during Easter * - eek, for the purpose of entertaining the visiting delegates to tho Annual Conference. WORKERS' EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIA- : TION. There was a fairly large attendance at the Trades Hall last night, when the- Workers' HchieationaV Association 1 of Canterbury was formed. Mr Geo. Scott presided. Mr L. G. Whitehead reported ' that the following unions had. agreed to affiliate:—Lyttelton Wharf Labourers, Amalgamated Society of Carpcntere and Joiners, General Labourers, tha Canterbury Timber "Yards, Sawmill and Coalynrds , Employees, Motal Workers, Furniture- Trad<>s. and tho Trades and Labour Council. The National Peace Council had also applied \ for affiliation. The proposed constitution and rules were explained by Messrs 'Meredith " Atkinson and H, D. 1 Stewart. Mr Atkinson expressed the hopo that the whole Dominion would x bo organised according to provincial dief-ncte before the epd >- of the year, when a New Zealand Association would be formed. He addedthat Mr Stewart hoped to arrange to get cent him nl] the labour publications :s3ued l>v the different Governments in Australasia, lie explained that tho Association accepted students whether or net they belonged to the Association. They desired 6tudente to belong to the-Association, and in New South Wales every tutorial close wae affiliated to tie Association. A number of questions regarding the details of th* work of the Association were answered by Messrs Atkinron and Stewart. A letter wee read asking for a tutorial'eliisa in economics at Runanga. Mr Stewart eaid that after visiting the Wt«st Coast he believed it would form a strong centre of the Association. Mr J. A. McCullough moved:—"That the Workora , Educatfonal Association of Canterbury be formed," and eaid that he believed the Association had com« to etay owing to the d«niand f Or education by'the workers. Whitehead and Howard were appointed secretaries of the Association, and the thanks of the meeting was accorded.the Provieional Committee and the eecretalieis in the work of organising- (jh« Association.
