MALVEBN. At the monthly meeting of the Malvcrn County Council, the tender of J. "Walker for stone-breaking on Welbourne's and Sharp's roads, at 3s per yard, was accepted. Correspondence was received from the Ellesmere County Council with reference to erecting a bridge over the Selwyn river, near the present railway bridg© at Selwvn. CrsWright, Judd. and Warren were elected delegates t o attend a meeting of adjoining counties to consider the proposal- From the Whakatane County Council, forwarding a resolution passed by it that local bodies should be enabled to allow a rebate- , for payment of rates within a certain time." It was reported that a ratepayer had made a-hole in the embankment-, of a water-race for irrigation. The. clerk was instructed to inform him that if it occurred again he" would be prosecuted. Regarding the suggestion of the Whakatane County Council to ask the Government to amend the law to enable local bodies to allow a rebate for prompt payment of rates, it was considered to, be a case for the New.
