MALVEBN. At the monthly meeting of the Malvcrn County Council, the tender of J. "Walker for stone-breaking on Welbourne's and Sharp's roads, at 3s per yard, was accepted. Correspondence was received from the Ellesmere County Council with reference to erecting a bridge over the Selwyn river, near the present railway bridg© at Selwvn. CrsWright, Judd. and Warren were elected delegates t o attend a meeting of adjoining counties to consider the proposal- From the Whakatane County Council, forwarding a resolution passed by it that local bodies should be enabled to allow a rebate- , for payment of rates within a certain time." It was decided that the Council could not support the resolution. From the 'Belgium lielief Committee, Christchurch. asking for the Council's co-operation in tlie matter of the Han'est Festival on April 10th. It was resolved that the different councillors form committees in their own districts to institute a canvass, and that a.court be established at the Festival, to be called Tho Malvern County Court. As reports were again received about the pollution of waterraces by pigs, it was agreed not to send any further notices to old offenders, but to summon them for this breaelv of the by-laws. Havinu obtained estimates for licht bridges over water-races, it was decided to ask the Automobile Association to co-operate with the Council in their erection. The following repairs were The road past Mclntosh's nffar Kirwee to bo improved, the West Const road from Bleak House corner to Highfield road to be graded, footbridge on Ward's road., and several minor works. OXFORD. The Oxford County Council''met on Tuesday. Present: Messrs D. Hawke (chairman), A. Baxter. H. Campbell, J.- Cook, J. Cross, E. W. Meyer, and J. Wells. The surveyor reported that the firewood was still unsold.. It was resolved to. have it cut and' stacked. It was agreed to put a longer flume in the water-race iv Pearson Park, to fence the ends of the culvert at Crowe's Creek, to advertise for a caretaker for the Eyre water-races for three years from April Ist, applications to be iii hy 21st inst.; to request Mr Blunden "Uo sign the lease of a reserve, or it Mould be cancelled, and to apply for two acres of land on the west side of the Snowdale road for a shingle reserve! The surveyor was instructed to arrange for 300 or 400 yards of metal for the Ashley Gorge, road. On application to th*e Council, one gang of employees was granted liberty to attend the,rabbit drive on Wednesday, but ultimately they decided to work and hand the day's pay to the clerk on behalf of the Poor of Belgium Fund. The ranger brought in his report, and it was resolved to appoint him caretaker of the Cooper's Creek and Gamman's Creek water-races, from April Ist. It was resolved to call for tenders for shingling the lower end of Stubb's road, also for-Brown's Rock road. The surveyor was instructed to apply for authority to construct .the View Hill Creek bridge on the Depot road, also to prepare a plan and estimate for a concrete bridge over the .Woody Gully Creek at the enst end of Stubb's road. It was resolved to protect the fiver hank at the 6outh side of the Burnt Hill ford, provided ratepayers to be benefited pay the cost of piles and wire. It was resolved to rescind a motion ■ passed on Slay sth last constituting a third riding; to request the constable to enforce the bylaws regarding lights on vehicles, and the speed of motor-cycles, and increase tho pay for team work by Is per day per horse, on account,of the price or chaff. It was reported that a ratepayer had made a-hole in the embankment-, of a water-race for irrigation. The. clerk was instructed to inform him that if it occurred again he" would be prosecuted. Regarding the suggestion of the Whakatane County Council to ask the Government to amend the law to enable local bodies to allow a rebate for prompt payment of rates, it was considered to, be a case for the New. Zealand Association.
