DEATH OF WELLKNOWN GEOLOGIST.
(By CaWft—Preee Association.—CopyTijcht.) LONDON, March 2. Tho death is announced of Dr. James Geikie. Dr. James Geilde, LL.D., D.C.L., F.R.S., P.G.S., and an honorary member of many learned • societies abroad, was born at Edinburgh on August 23rd, 1839. He was the younger brother of Sir Archibald Geikie, and was educated at. the High School and Edinburgh University. . He entered H.M. Geological Survey in 1861, became district Surveyor in 1869 ? and was appointed to the Murchison Chair of Geology in Edinburgh University in 1882. He won tho Brisbane Medal, Royal Society; Edinburgh, the Murchison Medal, Geological Society, London, and the "Gold Medal, Royal Scottish Geographical Society. He was one of the founders and a past president of the Royal Scottish Geological Society, and hon. editor of the Scottish Geojrraphical Magazine. He was Emeritus Professor of Geology and Mineralogy and formerly Dean of tho Faculty of Science, Edinburgh University.
