ELLESMERE DISTRICT.

The reading of appeals from the Clmstchurcli Committee of the Poor of Belgium Relief Fund, at the monthly meeting of the EUosmere County Council, led to a lengthy discussion as to the best wa v of collecting money and fioods for the relief of the suffering Belgians. The committee's circular asked the Council's co-operation in making the Belgian Harvest Festival to be held at Christchurch on April 10th, a great success. One of tho councillors suggested that the best tiling to do would be to make a straight-out grant of £150. but the question cioppo.l up as to whether the Council could legally make a grant to the fund, and it was decided to make enquiries before making any grant, 'fhe general opinion of the members was that the Government should make a monthly contribution, and it was decided to* telegraph to the Prime Minister, urging that tho question of Belgian relief should be made a national one. .

Tt was decided to hold public meetines in various portions of the district with the object of netting up committees to canvass for produce for an KUesinere County stall at the Christchurch .Festival. Meetings were arranged as follows: —Friday, sth, Leeston'and Dnnsandel; Monday. Brookside ami Irwell; 'Tuesday, Lakeside; Wednesday, Doyleston and Killinchy. A meeting of ladios is to be held at Southbridge on Friday afternoon to consider what steps should be taken to collect money and produce.
