DIAMOND HARBOUR ESTATE.
SUCCESSFUL SALE OF SECTIONS
In view of tho opposition which nas been shown in somo Quarters to. tho Lyttelton Borough Council's trans-har-bour schemo on the Diamond Harbour Estate, it was anticipated that the thirty-four sections offered for salo by the Borough Council would not meefc with a ready demand. The sale, which took placo on Saturday at the salerooms of Messrs Craddock, McCrostio Company (who sold m conjunction with Mr Charles Clark) falsified these expectations, every section boing sold and good, prices being realised. Tho attendance was large, and the bidding brisk. The total of tho sales made was £20*25. Mr Craddock, after detailing the conditions of sale, stated that it was tho intention of the Lyttolton Borough Council to make tho settlement at. Diamond Harbour a model residential suburb. It was not intended to allow business premises to bo erectad. When the auctioneer was asked under what law it was proposed to prohibit the erection of business premises, ho advised his questioner to consult his lawyer. Continuing, Mr Craddock said that there would bo no unreasonable building restrictions, but plans would havo to bo submitted to and approved by the Borough Council in tho same way that plan, had to bo approved by ttie City Council at Christchurch. Tho opposition to tho scheme, he thought, came from people who were unablo to .co beyond the moles at Lyttelton, and ho ventured tho opinion that instead cf the failure predicted, tho suburb would develop into a very big thing.*- As to water supply and sewerage, the Borough Council had these matters under consideration. It was known where water existed, but buyers purchased without any guarantee on these points. . Regarding the ferry, ho said that tho Borough Council had a contract with the Harbour Board providing for a ferry service of at least five trips daily. Ho mentioned that purchasers could elect to tako up sections on Glasgow leases—2l.. yoars at a rental equal to 4 per cent, of the purchase money. The following are tho details of the salo:—
