HUNTLY RELIEF FUND

OVER £230 OBTAINED.

Flowers of almost every kind and hue were in evidence everywhere on Saturday in the city, the occasion being t..«» street collection in conuexion with tho Huntiy Relief Fund. Some who were inclined to think that the public is becoming surfeited in the matter of theso collections wero somewhat astonished with the response that the youthful collectors received. Very few conld resist the double temptation —tho appeal of tho school children and the beauty of the flowers. The collection was taken up under the control of the Ladies' Committee of the Huntiy Relief Fund, assisted by tho North Canterbury Public Schools' Amatenr Athletic Association, and by a largo number of lady teachers. Flowers for the collection had I—en received from almost every part of Canterbury — from as far south as Ashburton. and. as far north as Balcairn, A large quantity was received from the Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes's garden at Tai Tapu. About fivo hundred school children were engaged in collecting and in keeping tho collectors supplied with flowers. The children were from tho Elmwood. Addington. Sydenham. West Christchurch, East Christchurch, Wharenui, Somerfield. Belfast. Cashmere, Lyttelton West, Marist Brothers'. Opawa Richmond, Technical College, Waltham, Wiggins's Private and Woolston schools. The Chamber of- Commerce Hull presented a very busy scene all the morning after 8.30 o'clock, when the collection started. The sale of flowers continue.! till late in the afternoon. Tho total amount obtained by the children was £209 17s Id. and special sales by one or two ladies netted £l*lCs 9d. making a total of £211 13s 10d. Mrs Harvey Patterson, who regretted that she had no flowers to send, promised a subscription. The joint secretaries of the Huntiy Fund had a very busx and a very long day, and were at the Chamber of Commerce from 8 a.m. till 10 p.m. Miss E. A. Hill, tho secretary of the Ladies' Section, also had a very strenuous time. In the evening a street collection was taken up by a number of young ladies, and this resulted in an additional sum of £21 13* Gd beine got. making mo grand total for the day £_33 .3 .d. BENEFIT DRAMATIC PERFORMANCE. On December loth, in St. Michael's Schoolroom, a triple bill will be presented by an amateur dramatic organisation. First on the programme will ho "The Little Stone House," by George Caldoron, a well-known authority on Russian drama. This powerful study of Russian life, with its characteristic back-ground of Siberia, will bo faithfully presented in every detail. The other two plays, one of domestic interest, the other a farcical sketch of a very amusing character, first pro-duced-by Cvrii Maude at tho Playbouse, will be in striking contrast to the Russian play, and fK*> whole programme promises an evening cf unusual treasure *iid interest. A number of Christchurch amateurs, including Mrs H. E. Marsh, are taking part: tho pfoys are produced under the direction of Mr L. H. Booth. r>nd an excellent performance is assured.
