COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS' ACTIVITIES.

An enthusiastic meeting of all the sub-committees of tho Canterbury Commercial Travellers' and .Warehouseman's Association in- connexion tvith the Open-Air Homes for Children Fund was hold in the rooms of tho Association last night, Mr S. A. Orchard (president) being in the clpir. • There is every indication that the effort to bo made by the Association on August Ist will be one that will be remembered by the public of Christchurch for a long time, and, judging by the whole-hearted way the members are entering into the spirit of the thing, the fund should reap a substantial benefit. The president reported |hat he would be responsible for the motor-cars for the procession. He had aiready been • promised 30 cars, and had no doubt that quito sufficient for the day A«ould be forthcoming. Tbo A-arious committees gave in their • reports, and in the discussion which followed, it was decided that it would be inadA'isablo for children to take part in the procession, Ai*hich would be run by members or tho Association only. Tho arrangements for costumes were settled in detail, and a section of those present promised to organise a Darktown Fire Brigade, if the necessary implements could be borrowed from tho city brigade. The Route Committee reported that about 200 men would be needed as scouts, marshals, etc., and up to the present it had been decided that the procession would start from Latimer square* at 9.30 in the morning of August Is.. Tho area covered? by the scouts for collecting purposes would be roughly, between Durham street in the Avest, Madras street in the east, Armagh street in the north, and the railway in the south, and special attention would be paid to sports' grounds Avhere matches were in progress. The actual route of the procession had not been settled, but it Avas sugsested that it be, approximately, down Madras street to Cashel street to the Clock Tower; from the Clock Tower, down Hi eh street to about opposite White's, , and then along Manchester street, Gloucester street, Colombo street, and so on to the Square. ' The Musical Committee are going to make things lively during the day. The far-famed band "will . accompany the procession, and a specially selected concert party will give concerts at intervals, • ending up with a grand finale from the vantage point of certain lorries in the Square in the evening. One of the • moving i spirits in the Musical Coirunit.ee urged upon members the necessity of working* hard to make the concerts a success. "Do a turn Avhen you can," he said, "even if you happen to -be engaged elsewhere, and then get away again/ "They might have to!" interjected another* member of tlie gathering amid loud laughter. In the general discussion which followed,- it A**as suggested that a "thermometer" be set.up.outside tho Association's offices, so that the public could have an idea of now the collection Avas going on. A suggestion that members who travelled in the country should take out lifts to endeavour to get subscriptions 1 was very heartily supported. There is no donbt at- all that the Association" Avill carry the business through to a successful issue, and the readiness which offers of help were ' made is very gratifying indeed. • The next meeting will be on July 18th; at 7.30 pan.
