THE TRAMS.

TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir, —I see in to-day's "Press" a letter signed "Proud of Christchurch," t in which the writer states that he rides ■ on our trams for less than a halfpenny '- per mile. It is no wonder that I had to pay a rate of £1 16s 4d in 1913, and I have been informed it is going to be higher next year. Unfortunately for mc I live in a district where the Board charges us 3d for a two-mile rido. I am speaking of the Worcester streetDallington line. The first section from Cathedral sqnare to Stanmore road is all right, but on aocount of my living on the north eido of Linwood Avenue the Board will carry mc only 30 chains on the second section for a penny and a further penny to take mc to the Mile road, a distance all told of 2 miles for , . threepence. I think it is time th< North Linwood and Avonside peoph made a move in this matter, as there is no doubt we are penalised on. thh route. I 8» afraid "Proud of Christl church" has not travelled very far from home, or he would not write in the above strain; I have travelled round the world and Chrietchurch is the most expensive iv the matter of tram fares. I, have travelled from Sydney to Botany Bay and back, a distance of 18 miles, for one shilling. I could quote others, but must not trespass on your space.— Yours, etc., . . _____ S. IRWIN.
