COUNTY COUNCILS.

ELLESMEBE. Tho Ellcsmero County Council met at Leeston on Monday, when there were present:—Oouncillors J. eitorry {chairman), J. C. Ereo, J. Cunningham,.T. A Stephens, F. J. Lemon, and J. Lochhcad. Mr John Sowden, Dunsandel, applied to have further repairs effected to the Sonthbridge-Rakaia road, and also asked for pipes for a water-race. —It was decided to draw tho attention of tho Council's contractors to the state of the road in question,-and to inform Mr Sowden that the Council could not sco its way to provide him with the pipes. An application from Mr F. Kaill for repairs to SolUttfs road was granted. The assistant oloctrical engineer of the Public Works Department acknowledged receipt of a letter from tho Council, giving data required in connexion with the supply of electrical energy to the county from Lake Coleridge. An application from Mr W. O. Ronnie for tho romoval of willows blocking Boggy creek, Doyleston, was granted. The Jarrah Timbor Company wrote stating that owing to want of shipping they could not supply timber for repairs to tho Solwyn traffic bridge until August. The Council decided to inspect the bridge on a date,to bo arranged. Mr J. Boag, senr., applied to have a drain cleaned on his frontage, and his application was granted. Several residents of Leeston petitioned the Council to clean a drain on' Penlington street, and the matter was left in tho hands of Crs. Lemon and Lochhead. Tho month's reports of the county eugineer, stock ranger, and water-race caretaker were read and considered. Mr H. Bilborough, Dunsandel. interviewed tho Council relativo to the provision and maintenance of bridges or culverts ovor a wator-raco leading past tho properties of several ratepayers, and asked if the Council would provide cement for concrete culverts if the interested parties undertook to provide other materials and labour.—Tho matter was Hold over for a month for consideration. Mr W. Bowie, Doylestou, saw the Council with regard to drainage matters, and Crs. Lochhead and Lemon wore deputed to insnecfc tho drains referred to by Mr Bowis. The Council decided to pay 9d • per dozen for the heads oP injurious small birds. The tendor: of John McDermofct was accepted for cleaning Cooper's drain, at Is od per chain. • " .
