NEW GERMAN LINE.

AN IMPORTANT SHIPPING VENTURE.

TO START NEXT MONTH

(nZSS ASSOCIATION TEXSGRAU.) WELLINGTON, Juno 8Tho announcement made a few days ago that a udw regular direct line of German steamers to New Zealand was about to bo inaugurated, covers one of the most interesting moves, in tho shipping world, so far as the Dominion is concerned, for many years. At tlio same' time, according to enquiries made by a "Now Zealand Times" representative, the fact that Germany is peeking trade in these waters is going to mean a bigger thing lor New Zealand than many peopie imagine, (ierman steamers'of ten, twelve, and probably fourteen thousand tons, calling regularly at the four principal ports, will mean increased port dues jor tno n&rbour Boarde, and the probable opening up of trade with, the country that is pow competing for tho maetory ol the world's commerce. Very little detail has been received by tho Wellington agents of tjio Nord-deutsche'r-Lloyd Line (Messrs Castendyck and Focke) regarding the new service from Continental to New Zealand ports. The first vessel is announced to leave the Continent towards tho middle of next month. Tho outward route of the steamers will be via Cape Town and- Hobarfc, thence to Auckland, Wellington, Jjytr-t-olton, and Dunodin, and in Boxna cases Bluff.' Tho homeward routs 13 not yet announced, but it is anticipated that vessels TdlPfio via- South America, allowing space to pick up frozen meat irom Argentino. The service is to bo maintained by tho stoamere of the German-Australian and Norddeutscher-Llqyd lines monthly, so that there, will be two pteapjers, ono loading and one discharging, in Now Zealand waters during each month. Tho claps of cargo which, is to be brought from the Continent is qs yot a, matter of conjecture, but in shipping and commercial circles it is anticipated that this new move, backed up by tho. German trado combine, means that German manufacturers intend to Eush, new trade in the dominion, [oraeward the cargo will be-principally or frozen meat, mutton predominating. Germany now. has »n extensive 1 trade wjth the Argentine in frozen beef, so that t|ie exportation of this product to the Continent wiljnot be as extensive as that of frozen mutton and lamb. Tho German-Australian steamer Linden is already on her way to. New Zealand .from Hamburg with a cargo of manures bound for Bluff, port Chalmers, and Lyttelton. It-was thought that this vessel tvns the firet of the new line, but Mr Fbcke stated to»day that she has nothing to do with it. A cargo of phosphates happened to bo offering, and there was nothing to show that this was tho Detrinning o f the new service. In any ense, tl>e new line wonld not be started from the Continent until July.
