LAST NIGHT'S MEETING
The Christehurch. City Council m< last night. The Mayor (Mr H Ho land) presided, and there were" aL present—Crs. W. H. Cooper J. I Hayward, J. Reynolds, Goo. Scott, . MeCombs, H. Hunter. J. Dr Fenwick wrote, suggesting tha the Council should pass a by-law, taa ing each bicycle 2s 6d per annum, th Council to supply a plate bearing number, also a card showing the nam of the cyclist, and numbered like th plate. The nlate would be attached t the rear mudguard, and would pror< a check on the bicycle thi.»f. Cr. Otley said ho did not think thi Council should tax cycles. Cr. McCullough said the proposal dit not seem to be a reasonable one. H< moved that the Council regretted ii could not see its way to comply wit! the suggestion. The motion was adopted. HEATHCOTE RIVER POLLUTION. The secretary of the BockenhamFisherton Residents' Association forwarded copies of letters addressed tt the Heathcote County Council and the Health Officer, complaining of the pollution of the Heathcoto, caused by septic tanks discnaiging therein, and asking that the practice should be prohibited altogether. Cr. Scott said the Heathcote Council would look after the matter, and would see to it that the river was not polInted. The letter was received. RESERVES COMMITTEE. The Reserves Committee reported that thirty acres had beon cleared at Bottle Lake, ready for the tree-plant-ing to be done during the season. The committee recommended that the work of digging the necessary holes be dono by contract. The committee had taken into consideration the letter from the Social Democratic Party with regard to supplying work for the unemployed, and reported that it hat! no suitable work for general labourers at present. The report was adopted. STREET LIGHTING. The Works Committees reported that, in view of the delay in the supply of electricity from Lake Coleridge, and of the fact that the contract with tbe Gas Company for lighting the public lamps in the city expired on October Ist, the committee had been negotiating with the Gas Company for an extension of the contract, and the company had offered to carry on the contract on the basis of the numbor of lamps in use remaining as at present, viz., &60 single lamps and 21 double lamps at the rate of £4 per single lamp "and £6 per double lamp per annum, terminable ai one month's notice from the first day of any month. The committee recomI mended that the offer bo accepted. EDCEWARE ROAD. Regarding the widening of Edgeware road, the Works Committee reported that Mr J. B. Armstrong had offered to give a strip of his land fronting on the south side of Edgoware road, be"tween Packe street and Barbadoes j street, 7ft in depth, for the purpose of a, footpath. The committee recommended that the offer-be accepted, ' subject to certain conditions. That would involve acceptance of the offer from Mr Dnnstan and others, viz.. 7ft of land to form a footpath between Barbadoos and Fitzgerald streets, which was before the Council -on May 11th last, and rejected for the reason that the committee thought the street should be widened to 66ft; but that was found to be unattainable at present. TRAMWAYS ACT. Cr. Hunter moved that the Government be urged to amend the Christchurch Tramways Act to extend the qualification of elections for the Tramway Board to that laid down in the most recent amendment in the Municipal Corporations Act.
