NEWS AND NOTES.

KAIKOI'RA. About six years ago, the County Council obtained from .Mr C. K. Kounthwaito. C.E.. of Wellington, a report upon, and estimate of, the cost of a water supply and drainage system for the town of Jvaikoura. Ho advised bringing in water from Hughie's crock, on the Mount Fyffe road, some four miles_ distant, estimating the cost at £4795, and of a sewerage system at £2600. The county engineer (Mr H. Browne) propounds another water scheme. He recently advocated obtaining a supply from a spring on the Mount Pleasant properly, just"off tho Kaikoura-Waiau road. "i.lso about 3} to 4 miles out, estimating the cost at about £"3000. Some objection is urgo'd to this proposition, by men who know tho position well, on tho ground that the ispring does not give an assured supply, while Hughia's-creek can be relied upon to do so. In both cases tho water is of excellent quality. As an adequate supolv of water for tho town is daily becoming more important in the minds of urban residents (recently a speaker at a public meeting here declared that it was one of tho most urgently pressing necessities of the place), public action in furtherance of the project may bo taken ero long. Tho lapse, however, of six years without any visible advance towards the goal sought, does not appear very promising. Yet Kaikoura is waking up to its needs, and gives evidence of intention to throw off the remaining portion of the "Hip Van Winkle ,, habiliments it has worn so long.
