SERVICE UNDER THE DEFENCE ACT.
I •- (PRESS ASSOCIATION TEL-GRAM.) DUNEDIN, June 1. Edward Frederick Lawrence, a ! master butcher, was charged at the j Police Court this morning with penalising D. Cameron, a person in his employ, for rendering the personal service required by him under the Defence Act by dismissing him. Cameron, in his evidence, said he was in Lawrence's employ three weeks bofore going to camp, perm.'ssion to do so being granted by Lawrence. When witness returned to work he was told that he was not wanted. Another man I had been put in his pbce. j Defendant's counsel said the real j reason for Cameron's dismissal was in- I competence, and he was only employed { temporarily while one of t'he" hands was away. Mr Bartholomew. S.M., said it was certainly a case for enquiry, hut he thought the explanation given by the employer was adequate and an answer ■• te the charge. Defendant had never | shown any hostility to Cameron attend- j ing camp. The case would bo dis- ' missed.
