Tho Hon. James Allen. Minister of j Defence and Finance, went North last, ovening. Lieutenant Tahu "Rhodes was a passenger for Wellington by last night's ferry steamer. Major and Mr* Campbell (Ergland) and Lady Campbell are staying, in town. Dr. Bennett, lato house phyrdcian at Guy's Hospital, a son of Mr A. W. Bennett, Cashmere Hills, is coming out as surgeon of tho Ruapchu,' which is due on July 27th, Our Wellington correspondent tele__rnnh<! that Mr nnd Mr* 8. M. * T au_h«n, of North Canterbury, returned to New Zealand by the Rotonia yesterday,after an absence of two years, during which Mr. Vanghan was engaged in the wool business at Bradford. Among the passengers who arrived atWellington from London by the Rotorua yesterday wero Captain'C. R. MacDonald, of the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and Captain Gibbons, of t_« Royal Irish Fusiliers, both of whom wore accompanied by their wives ailfamilies. Captain Mac Donald will succeed Lieut.-Colonel Braithwaite (who has been appointed Chief of the General Staff in succession to Colonel Heard) as General Staff Officer for the Auckland military district. Captain Gibbon will replace Lieut.-Colonel Cochrane (who has gone to England) as Director of Military Operation*.
