In the Houso of Lords, tho Bishop of London moved tho second reading of tho Criminal Law Amendment Bill, which proposes to raise tho age of consent from sixteen to eighteen, and otherwise increaso the protection of girls./
In moving tho second reading of tho Bill, the Bishop of London declared that many girls between sixteen and eighteen wero on tho London streots. A girl's property was protected until fcho was twonty-ono, thorefore it was surely right that her virtue should be protected until sho was eighteen. Tha present condition of tho criminal law was unworthy of a Christian State.
Tho Lord Chancellor (Lord Haldane) feared that thai raisine of the age of consent would tend to produco blackmail, which was increasing in London. Tho Government did not opposo tho Bill, and tho second reading was carried.
