BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEW BRIGHTON.

The fortnightly meeting of the Now Brighton Borough Council was held on Monday. Present—Tho Mayor (Mr C. H. Winny). Crs. J. Ainger, G. W. Staniland, F. Kibblewhite, O. V. Bergh, A. W. Owles, C. Israelson, J. Ashley, and C. Withell. Correspondence was received from the clerk of the Heathcote County Council, acknowledging the Council's letter agreeing to pay onethird of tho cost of the maintenance of tho - Bower bridge, and that the Heathcote # Council was trying to get the Waimairi County Council to fall into line, failing which it would bo necessary to apply for a Commission. Mrs Annie E. Turner thanked the Council for its kindness in meeting a difficult situation, which arose in connexion with her property in the borough. The Works Committee reported that Mr W. Recce's application to fix a 6eptio tank at his house had been granted, but was unable to agree to Mrs Lawry's request that the formation of Herring Bay road bo continued past her property. The Finance Committee reported the receipts for tho fortnight had been £433 19s, and tho expenditure £233 10s Id. Cr F. Kibblewhite drew attention to the cutting up of the clay surrounding tho Surf Club's pavilion. The matter was referred to tho Works Committee. It was resolved to dispense with the extra hands employed by the Council on casual employment from March 7th. The foreman was instructed to prepare a schedule showing cast of all works completed, and to submit it to the Finance Committee. The Mayor reported that the Government was willing to pay cost of improvements to the sports ground up to £100. Tho committee approves of the action of the Sports Ground Committee in accepting Mr Lestor'n offer to do certain work for £80, and also that the balance (£2oj be expended _on sinking an artesian well. Mrs McCallum's offer to sell to th© Council the swings on the beach for £5 was accepted.
