The Senate, by 23 votes to 10,'r*jected Mr W. P. Schreiner's amendment to delete the banishment clause, General Smuts emphasising that tho departure of thousands of workers was a result of the deportods and their followers' action, lie feared that th* cherished white ideal had been shafc tered.
