OBITUARY.
♦ MR LUMLEY MORGAN. There passed away at his residence, Tai Tapu, last week, one of the pioneers of the district, in the person of Mr Lumley Morgan. Born in Cardiganshire, South Wales, in 1832, the doceased spent the earlier years of his life on a farm, and in the coal mines of South Wales. In 1860 he sailed in the Chariot of Fame for Melbourne, and worked for about a year on tho goldfields of Bondigo. The gold rush in Otago setting in at this time, he crossed over to New Zealand and worked on the Dunstan for a few months, and then came to Christchurch. In January, 1863, ho took up land at Tai Tapu, where he lived till the timo of his death —a residence of fifty-one years. The late Mr Morcan shared all the difficulties and hardships of the early settlors. He was a consistent supporter of the Methodist Church, filling the position of trustee and steward, also representative of tho circuit at the annual conferences. He was also at various times connected with the local bodies of the district, and always took a keen interest ; n any project for the advancement of the district. Tbo late Mr Morgan is survived by his wif*. two sons—[Messrs T. O. Moriran, and XV. L. Mo reran—and an unmarried daughter, all residents of the district, and a trrnnd-daupditer.
