GREYMOUTH CASES.

Vida Upton, on two charges of forgery in connexion with withdrawals from tho Grey post offico, was committed for trial at tho Magistrate's Court to-day. Tho evidence for the prosecution alleged that accused was in the habit of visiting a married woman at \Vaiuta. from whom she etolo a Post Office Savings bank-book, and presented two withdrawal slips for £10 and £15 at an interval of an hour. Accused had taken out a ticket in the name of
Miss Smith for Wellington by the Mapourika, from which ship her luggage was recovered by tho police. It is alleged that she purchased a ring and ' banglo of the value of £9. Accused pleaded not guilty. Bail was allowed, self in £150, and a Burety of £150. A woman from tho country was charged with practising as an unregistered midwife. The evidence showed that she was called at 2.30 a.m., and the child was born late at night on the same day. The defence was that it was a case of emergency, and there was no evidence or accused making a practice of midwifery. Mr Hewitt, S.M., dismissed .the charge on tho question of practice.
