LANDS FOR SETTLEMENT.

THE HILLERSDEN SETTLEMENT, Considerable interest is being manifested in Canterbury in the'subdivision of tho Hillersden Settlement of 79,190 acres in th« Marlborough district, which is open far .selection on renewable lease. Tho ballot for the eoctions for which there is more than onci applicant will be held in tho Blenheim Town Hall on March sth. A large number of enquiries respecting this settlement are being inaao at tue district Lands Office. Hillersden Settlement, formerly the property of Air Thomas Carter, 13 situated in the Wairau and 'Wainopai Valleys, about twonty-five miles westward (or inland) from li:enln>iru, and extending along those valleys from ten to eleven mile*. The main Wairau Valley road, Blenheim to Tophouso and tho Builer. traverses the northern portion of the settlement, and all sections in thii part of 'tho estate front on to this road, which is level, well-formed, and jnctalled throughout. Access to the southern part of the settlement lying in the "Wajhopaj Valley is obtained by tho Waihopai Valley road. The area to be opened for application contains roundly 79.000 acres, divided into forty-threo allotments, varying in area from 861 to 9900 acres. Each suction has a good homestead site and frontage, to a metalled or formed road. Tho settlement lies at an altitude rarriuß from 580 feet on the flats to 4-500 feet on the higher parts or range tops, and comprises all classes of country which is well for shenp raising. Where cultivation has been carried out, zood crops of oats and roote hay« been obtained. Amongst the improvements on tho estate are the homesteads and buildings at Hillersden, Wantwood, The Flaxmill, Stronvar, and Te Arowhonua.
