WESTPORT COALFIELDS.

* ,— A NEW SEAM IN THE STOCKTON MINE. (PEE3S ASSOCIATION TELECBAM.) WESTPORT, September 2. The Ngakawau correspondent of the Wcstport "'News" advises that work in connection with the development of a new 6eain of coal, situated in the new eastern held of the Stockton mine, was commenced on Monday, when the company drove on the seam for a distance of six feet, producing some fourteen or fifteen tons of clean, hard bituminous coal. The seam is twelve to eighteen feet in height, and is in direct connection with the main haulage ropes. It is anticipated by the company that this eeani will tswell the present output to over 800 tons per day. The coal is etjual if not superior, to anything previously produced in the district, oo far only one pair of men is engaged on this field, but in a very short space of time tho seam will be sufficiently developed to enable as many hands to be employed as are needed for the market. The people in the district are naturally in good heart over what promises to give a much-desired fillip to tho Westport mining industry.
