PUBLIC WORKS.
NO GREAT I>EMANI> FOR EMPLOYMENT. (■γ-eciaj, to "the press.") WEI-LI NGTON, September 1. There does not seem to be any great demand for employment on public works at the present time. Some weeks ago, the Hon. W. Fraser (Minister of Public Works) stated to-day, employment was found by his Department for about two hundred men, most of whom applied through the Labour Department, but since that time there had been no exceptional demand for employment. From time "to time, the Minister rdded, a report came in.to the effect that a large number of men were out of work somewhere, but in every case those report? had proved, upon investigation, to be cither without foundation or greatly exaggerated. In one instance a story came from the West Coast that something like one hundred men were out of work. The actual position was ascertained to be that fourteen men had applied for work through the Labour Department, and three direct to tho Public Works Department. Generally speaking, Mr Fraser stated, his Department was in a position to meet all demands made upon ifc for employment. .
