RUN OVER BY A FIRE REEL.
DEATH OF A WELL-KNOWN OTAKI RESIDENT. ' ' (SPECIAL TO "THE VKESa.*-'} WANGANUI, September 1. From Otald comes news of the death, under unusual circumstances, of Mr A.. W. Skermaiij brother of Dr. Skerman, of Marton. It appears that on Thursday morning the Levin Fire Brigade was called to suppress an outbreak. of fire, and two or three men with a'firo* reel; rushed around the corner of Oxford and. Queen streets. ~ Mr Skerman, who was walking along the road, was struck and knocked down. The reel ran over his arm, and his head struck the road, rendering him unconscious. He was taken to a private hospital, where he died at night. The late Mr Skerman had resided in Otaki- for a number of years, and was a. member- of several- local bodies.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) GISBORNE, September 1. Edgar Evans, aged 14, was shot dead by his companion, Harold Parker, aged 13. with whom deceased and four others were out shooting yesterday. After lunch ofle of the party loaded the gun and laid it on the ground. Parker picked it up not knowing it was loaded and pulled the trigger, shooting Evans, who was only a few feet.a_way. AUCKLAND, September 1. Horace Colin Campbell, a farmer, single, 04 years of age, was found dead in the Mangawai River yesterday, with a. .saddle between his legs. Evidently I he had been thrown from his horse and drowned. The horse was seen close by with a broken bridle. •' INVERCARGILL, September 1. A man named Walker, a recent arrival in the district, was killed this afternoon at Donkins Bush, near Otautau, while engaged in hauling logs.
