A stiff south-east gale, accompanied by exceptional rain, is blowing. Tho sea is rough.

BELATED STEAMERS ARRIVE.

Tho southerly gale revived its strongth , on Tuesday night, and blew with frequent squalls of heavy rain and sleet during tho night.. Tho weather was bitterly cold, and heavy snow fell on Mount Herbert and tho other high peaks of Banks Peninsula. Tho wind abated in strength in tho morning, bat there was a fresh chilly breezo all day. Tho Mararoa was delayed over an hour on the passage down from Wellington, arriving at Lyttolton at 10 o'clock yesterday morning. Tho steamer Opouri, which arrived last night from Greymouth, had a very stormy passago round the coast. -She left the Grey river last Friday night, and ran into the gale after rounding Farewell Spit. She hnd a very bad passage through Cook Strait against a hard southerly gale with fierce hail and rain squalls and tremendous sea. She passed Cape Campbell about 2 a.m. on. Sunday, but as the weather becamo worse sho had to turn back and shelter behind the Cape. Sho got under way again oarly on Tuesday morning, and hnd a rough trip to Lyttelton. Tho Storm, from Terakoho and Pic- ••■. ton, which nrrived at Lyttelton early ypstordnj-, had a very rough handling in tho gale. Sho mado three attempt* to leavo > Picton, and finally got out on Saturday morning. Sho rounded Capo Campbell at 0 p.m. the same day, but there was a hard southerly gale Wowing, and a very high sea running, and, tho steamer had only'made, one milo by 10 p.m., when it was considered adVisablo to put back for shelter. Cloudy Bay until Sunday morning, but. as tho galo was blowing hnrdor than, ever, she had to po into Clifford Bay,' behind Cnpo % Campbell, for shelter onco more.
