Messrs H. S. Fitter and Sons, writing on March 28th, market lias been well supplied with all descriptions of meat during the past fortnight, and the demand has been moderate. This week, there has been a very heavy supply of Argentine chilled beef. Over 11,000 quarters were on tho market on Tuesday last, and thus glut has had' its effect on trade generally, causing it to. be very slow the last two days. The supply of Scotch and English mutton has been about equal to tho demand, and prices are firm. Ewes have been rather more plentiful. New Zealand mutton, being moro plentiful, has not maintained its price, and as it is so difficult to get back tho buyers from the River Plate mutton at the lower price, there is a weakening tendency. There has been a very good demand for New Zealand lamb this last week, and tho prospects are very favourable for firm prices in tho near future, and, provided supplies do not arrive , in a glut At any on? time, there is every prospect of a good season throughout. The heavy supply of Argentine chilled beef has brought about a considerable fall in price, especially for the hindquarters. Frozen boef has been moving a little moro freely, and prices have slightly advanced. Unfortunately, so much of this beef is very poor quality. Pork continues very scarce, and prices are firm. This is likely to be so whilst the weather is favourable to the pork trade."
