ELLESMERE.
Tho mouthly meeting of the Ellesmoro County Council was held at Leesion on Monday. Present: —Crs. Storry (chairman), J. C. Free, J. Cunningham, T. A. Stephens, F. J. Lemon, and J. Lochhead. Tho secretary of the Christchurch Underwriters' Association"ivroto in reply to a letter asking for a reduction in the fire insurance rates ip.Leeeton. The reply stated that it was customary in the case of such applications to obtain, a report from an inspector upon tho fire appliances, and the Council would bo informed of the dato of his visit to Leeston, if it could be arranged. It was decided to send formal applications to tho Public -Works Department . for grants towards the repairs of the Selwyn bridge, the improvement, of the Ellesmere Village Settlement drainage, and the renewal of the Cooper's lagoon culvert. The superintendent of the Leeston Fire Brigade wrote recommending certain improvements for the benefit or the brigade. It was decided to have tho rules printed forthwith, and that the clerk should make enquiries as to whether the Public Library could be used for the brigade's purpose aa a reading-room. Mr W. J. Doyle asked, on behalf of the residents of Doylestbn, for the cleaning of fifty chains of Boggy Creek. : It was decided to horse-drag the creek through Mr Eennie's land. Mr John McMillan, of Wanganui, wrote in reference to the shingling of Beachcroft road. According to the letter the contractor had put 340 yards more shingle on" tho Toad than he had anticipated, and he asked the Council to bear a share of the cost. Tho letter was held orer until next month. Thcwaterraco caretaker detailed his work at the river -to keep up, tho supply to the races. The last two freshes had done a gocd deal of damage to Mr Johnston's property along tho river bank. A number of road-crossings had been shingled, and the team was to be kept goiug this week repairing other crossings.
