NOTES. Both Louvois and Jest, the respective winners of the Two Thousand Guineas and One Thousand Guineas, arc members of Bruce Lowe's No. 1 family. Charlemagne- H. is advertised to stand at hia owner's Oakleigh etud, New South Wales, during next Beason at 50 guineas, at which figure a number of horses are announced. Flavus has had his fee- fixed at 100 guineas. "Con" Boyle, a well-known Hawke's Bay racing man, arrived from Sydney last Wednesday, Ho returns to New South Wales nest week with the steeplechase horso Captain Jingle and the Golden Sky. Mr E. J. Watt Was a passenger to Sydney by the Moeraki on Friday. The Hawke's Bay sportsman is now quite a prominent figure in Sydney racing circles, where iiis colours are often carried. :.. ■

Mr J. R. McDonald's cross-country horses Waiterere and Waione are regularly hunted with tho Manawatu Hounds. The pair are now fairly sound, and should they continue so will be raced over obstacles during the coming winter season. Martcl, the half-brother to Danube in M. Hobbs's stable, is looking really well, and it is rumoured that the Charlemagne' 11. colt has been responsible for several attractive gallops of late. Another colt that appears to be on the improve is Clencannich, who hails from the Chokebore Lodge stable. Hβ is by Glenculloch from Cresset, by Treadmill—Golden Crest.

D. Moraghan is training a big upstanding six-year-old bay gelding by Golden Knight—Justice. This customer, who is a. fine stamp of hurdler, is tho property of tho Ashburton sportsman, Mr J. Grigg, and is a half-brother to Chivalry, who raced with a fair amount of success a few years ago, and was subsequently sent to Australia. The Riccarton horseman, C. Emerson, at present heads the list of winning horsemen, with 49 wins to his credit. The North Island jockeys, B. Deeley and A. Oliver, are /second and third, with 47 and 46 wins respectively. It has been stated that the Riccarton lightweight, G. Clarke, will journey to England very shortly, and will join Mr Geo. Palmer's stable. This lad, who shows a deal of promise, wiU ride Sunbeam in the Ashburton • Cup on Thursday. The half-brothers, Pilgrim's Wny and Carolus, in H. Thomson's stable at Riccarton, are looking at their best, and should run prominently in their Ashburton engagements. - At the eleven totalisator race meetings in Southland this season, £13,C09 was offered in stakes, which were cut up as follow: —For open flat, races £7209, hack races £2080, hurdle races £300, steeplechases £935, class trots £1800, and open trots £1385. The amounts of stakes given per day were: —Southland £1125, Rivertou £1000, TVyndham £800, Goro £087 10s, Winton £65:2, Gore Trotting £635, Wairio £625, Tapaniii £277 10s, and Lake County £'220.

A pleasant little function took place on the Winton racecourse on Alonday week, when the foundation stone of the new grandstand was laid. Owing to the unavoidable absence of the president of the Club, the task was allotted to Mr R. Jamieson, one of the oldest members of the Club, and tho "father" of owners in that district. In placing the stone in position, Mr Jamieson briefly outlined the history of the Club, marking the progress racing had made in the past twenty-five years, and explaining how the Winton Jockey Club had kept pace with the times. He concluded by wishing that.tho Club would soon find the big stand they are now building to be too small to meet requirements.
