ATTITUDE OF THE COMPANY
The mannger of the Christchurch Meat Company was soon by a "Press"' , reporter yesterday in connection with the trouble that.has occurred at the Company's Smiti-fLld works, near Timaru. "The position." he said, "is practically this. ,After the strike two months ago, when the boards were in< process of being filled up by fresh men, some of the oid men presented themselves for re-engagement. Wo eimply selected somo of those men, filling up the vacancies remaining. The position at Smithfield lately was that wo had 18 to 20 'earners, with 46 old union men. These men were employed individually, under no award. A dispute occurred tho other day with a free labourer, and the 46 men went out in a body, declining to work unless this man was dismissed. We said we would hold an enquiry if they went back to work. They would not go back, so -there is the end of it. We are taking steps to fill their places, and to-day we have had enough applications to fill all the hooks. Tho old union men have been paid off."
