At a mooting of the Kaiapoi _>istrict High School Committee on Monday, Miss Nellie Hughey, of bouthbrook, and Miss Alma Barnard, of Kaiapoi, were recommended for appointment as pupil teachers. Sir Maurice O'Rorke will shortly bo tho recipient of a portrait of himself, for which public subscriptions were made. The portrait is now being completed by Mr C. F. Goldic, the wellknown artist. It is (says tho "New Zealand Herald") a three-quarter figure lifo-6izo picture, and it is said to bo a remarkably fine pieco of work. The presentation to Sir Maurice will probably take placo when tho members of the University Senate visit Auckland this month. Mr George H. Dixon, president of tho Now Rugby Union, has accepted the position of business manager of the "New Zealand Times," and has left Auckland to again take up his residence in 'Wellington. Mr C. E. Ma.tthews, Under-Secretary for Justice, who, in conjunction with tho Hon. A. L. Herdman, Minister for Justice, is paying a visit to all tho prisons in tho Dominion, is at present in Christchurch, and will bo her© for a few days. Mr A. E. Golding, of Rangiora, left for Wellington by the Maori last evening, en rout© for Napier Mi" A. Hobson has been elected president of the New Zealand Pharmacy Board for the current year. Mr G. W. Palmer, Receiver of Land Revenue at Invercargill, has received intimation of his appointment to the position of Receiver at Christchurch, in succession to Mr A. McNab, who resigned somo months ago.
