LYTTELTON.

A fierce nor'-wester raged at Lyttelton all day yesterday, and tho violent squalls were like blasts from a furnace. Through tho streets of tho town and along tho railway yard and water front the dust swept in suffocating clouds, and practically without check. A miserably inadequate contrivance, which for many years did duty in a far more humble and more useful capacity, is used for watering tho streets in Lytteltou, but owing to its. very limited capacity numerous stoppages havo to be made for refilling, and tho water, which does little more than trickle on to the roadway, damping a strip about five feet in width, dries in a very few minutes. It. was long past 2 p.m. before the watering cart made its appearance in Norwich Quay and showed its utter inadequacy. Yesterday was easily the hottest day experienced in Lyttelton this summer, tho thermometer registering 90 degrees in several well shaded spots in different parts of the town at midday.
