YESTERDAY'S NOR'WESTER.

Monday night was very sultry, and from soon after sunrise yesterday it was clear that Christchurch was about to do everything but enjoy one of the very hot days.of tho year. Presently the inevitable nor'wester sprang up, and the temperature in the shade at noon was 88 degrees. The asphalt footpaths were burning to tho feet, and a number of cases of burst tyres wero reported. Water carts were out in various parts of tho city, -but made- little headway against tho dust nuisance. Tins was very noticeable on the Riccarton road, particularly on the beginning of tho West Coast road, past th© Church Corner, where its direction is practically that of the wind. The dust was sweeping down thero in clouds, and the two watering carts wero unable to make any impression upon it at all. Tlie excursion cars to the seasid© were unusually heavily laden, and thoso who went by them to "the seaside found conditions mor© pleasant there. Yesterday was a trying day at Rangiora, and at midday the thermometer registered up to 93 degrees. Towards the evening a breezo sprang up, and the weather was much cooler.

The temperature at Kaiapoi yesterday reached 86 degrees in the shade.
