PERSONAL ITEMS.

$ ._ Arrivals in town include: —Messrs W. H. Rose, H. W. MoKollar. (Oamaru), A. Hume. J. Stephens, A. C. Stephens {Dunedin). H. P. Oling (Motonau) and AY. Dunstan (London).

Dr. A. A. Martin, of Palmerston North, well-known throughout the North Island, arrived in Christehurch on Sunday, and, with Mrs Martin, went on to Otago yesterday for a week's fishing. I>r. and Mrs Martin were the guests of tho doctor's brother, Mr J. Martin, manager of Messrs Wright, Stephenson, «md Co., during their stay.

Mr Evelyn Wrench, organiser of the Overseas Club, after spending a few days in Christchuroh went on South, lio is accompanied by his sister, Miss Wrench, and is on a world tour in connection with the world-wide Imperial orgausation ho controls. Miss Rata A. Bird and Mr J. A. MoLeod. who have just finished their pupil teacher course at the Burwood School, and aro proceeding to tho Training College, -were on Thursday afternoon the recipients of handsometokens of appreciation and regard from tho scholars of their classes. Mr J. E. 11. Smith, assistant master at the West Christchureh, School, has been recommended for appointment as first assistant master at the Waltham School, and Miss Ruth Jull and Mr Gurnsev as pupil teachers. ' On Friday evenins last, a number of tho Christchurch railway employees and their friends met in the Railway Social Hall, and entertained Mr M. Peryer, tho coaching foreman, who is retiring on superannuation. The chairman, Mr R. Brown, on behalf of those- present, wished Mr Peryer long life and happiness, and presented him with an "Ideal" handbag. After doing duo honours to the following toasts: —"Tho Kins," "Superannuated Members." "Our Guest," "Our Officers," "A.5.R.5.," and "Absent Members," a very-enjoyable evening was brought to a close with the singing of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow."

Last nieht the citizens of Palmerston North tendered a farewell social to Mr W. T. Wood. ex-M.H.R., and presented him with a purse of sovereigns. Mv Wood is leaving Palmerston North to seek health at a seaside resort.
