CLASSIFICATION OF SCHOOL TEACHERS.
__-_, ♦ —. At yesterday's meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board, Mr T. -W. Adams drew attention to a published statement that on Tuesday the Wellington Education Board considered a recommendation by tho Teachers' Institute that the appointment of teachers should bo made by a system of classification on merit instead of as at present. It was explained that the. system was now in operation in the Auckland district and working very satisfactorily. Mr Adams said that during ' the last few days he had received letters from teachers in that district complaining that the scheme did not work so well, and was not so satisfactory as some had claimed. Ono teacher, in a letter which he read, said that thero was extreme dissatisfaction with the system, and he would welcome an appointment under the North -Canterbury Board. A second letter, written by a woman with a CI. certificate, set out that the writer had been a teacher for sixteen years under the Auckland Board, she believed successfully. The next year she would reach her maximum in pay, as she was not fitted to be an infant teacher. . For women tho Board had closed all ways of promotion. Sho referred to the mental' state of tho teachers up thero as being ono of extreme discontent.
Mr E. H. Andrews said that when in Auckland a little ivhilo - ago he had found the teachers very discontented. The chairman, Mr H. Boyd, suggested that the matter was one which might well be left to tho Appointments Commit. I'<> for discussion, and that course was decided upon.
