Tho Parliamentary Estimates, revised by Mr Willis, included an increase of his own salary from £1000 to £1500, an increase of £160 for tho Chairman of Committees, and a new item of £100 each for tho Deputy-Chairmen of Committees. Mr Willis was out of the Chamber and members made the most of their opportunity and indulged in untrammelled criticism. His occupancy of tho chair was characterised as a "reign of terror," and ho himself ns nn "impertinent tinpot tyrant," a "bowdleriser of 'Hansard,' " "a freak," a "heaven-born organiser," and a "political bandit." Mr Lotvsdale thought the peoplo associated with tho Speaker ought to get higher salaries because of tho indignities they had to suffer.
