CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

MEETING OF BOARD OF GOVERNORS. Tho Board of Governors of Canterhury College met yesterday afternoon. Present:—Messrs J. C. Adams (chairman), T. W. Adams, C. H. Opie, Ij. B. Wood, G. Rennie, W. Izard, W. Brock, Geo. T. Weston, 3>r. Lester and Dean Harper. Leave of absence was granted 'Bishop. Grimes, Messrs S. H : 'Seagor and T. Hughes. . . Messrs Geo. T. Weston, Cla-ude Weston and Shailer Weston wrote acknowledging the Board's resolution of sympathy with them in the death of Mr T. S. Weston, and thanking the Board for the resolution. . The Department of Education stated that a grant of £1750 for additions to the School of Engineering had been authorised, and was payable after March 31st, 1913. Tho Department telegraphed that £1000 had been granted for extensions to the Girls' High School. The communications were received. The registrar announced the result of tiie recent election, and also a 00mmunicaton from the Department announcing the reappointment of Bishop Julius for the remainder of tho period for which he was originally appointed. Professor Blunt wrote asking for the loan of several relics in the Museum for exhibition at the Navy League's bazaar. Ho stated that thero would be a watchman engaged in connection with tho bazaar, that the relics would bo enclosed m a glass case, and would bo insured if the Board desired. It was decided to grant tho request, and ask the Navy League to insure tho The Headmaster of the Boys' High School wrote suggesting that a subcommittee should be authorised to open tenders for the extensions to the Boys' High School. * The Chairman and Mr S. Hurst Seager wero appointed to open and accept tenders for the extensions to tne Boys' and Girls' High Schools. The Chairman reported that just before the meeting started ho received a copy of Mr Justice Denniston's declaratory judgment in respect to the Public Library. Timo did not permit him to read the judgment or discuss it. and for tho present he would only lay it on the table. Tho judgment would come up for discussion, probably, at tho next meeting of tho College Committee. Mr Izard said that the judgment declared that tho Public Library is tho library referred to in the ordinances and statutes, and that the distribution of the trust must be at the discretion of the Board of Governors, but that discretion must bo exercised in good faith and with regard to the importance of the institutions provided for under the endowment. The report of the College Committee, which was discussed in committee, was agreed to as follows: —"That Regulation 3 in the College Calendar, page 74, be amended to read as follows: — '1. That the first term begin on the second Saturday in March, and end on tho Friday in the fourteenth week therefrom, and that the second term shall begin on the fifth Saturday after the end of the first term and end on November Ist. 2. Tho Easter recess I shall extend from the Thursday before Easter, to the Wednesday after Easter.' That Regulation 9 in the Col--1 lege Calendar, page 82, be amended to read as follows:—'1. An Exhibition of the value of £20, tenable for one year, is offered for competition at the Annual College Examination, in each of the following subjects: Latin, Greek, English, French, German, Economics. Puro Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Mental Science, History, and Constitutional History and Jurisprudence. 2. The Exhibition shall ho open to students completing second or third year's terms, as provided for in Regulation 8, clauso 2, and no Exhibition shall be awarded except to a student who satisfies the conditions of that Regulation, so far as they apply to him. 3. The Exhibitions shall be awarded on special papers of a moro advanced character than tho pass papers; and no Exhibition shall bo awarded except to a student who has reached a satisfactory standard in his special papers. 4. In tho case of a student who is of stand-1 ing to present himself for any University Examination, tho award of an Ex-

hibition shall bo contingent V-.on his passing such examination forthwith. 5. No student shall hold moro than ono Exhibition ,at a time. 6. Every candidate for an Exhibition shall send notico of his candidature, on tho prescribed form, to the Registrar of the College, not later, than September Ist, and shall at tho samo timo givo notice of his intention to the teacher of the subject concerned.' l That a special committee, consisting of Messrs J. O. Adams, L. B. Wood, C. H. Opie,. and W. Izard, be appointed to' confer with a committee of the ProfossoriaT Board for tho purpose of discussing the resolution ; passed by tho Board of Governors; on Atjiguet; 28th,: 1911, with extended leave of absence of Professors! . That.... Miss Kathleeri M. Gresson, M.A., be appointed to tho position of First Assistant at the Girls' High School, as from Ist February next, nt a salary of £220 per annum." Tho Board also considered, in committee, the estimates of receipts and expenditure for 1913, and, on resuming, confirmed the work done in committee and rose.
