ARBITRATION COURT'S AWARD.

The Arbitration Court met this morning to hear tho dispute between the New Zealand Federated BootmakersUnion and the New Zealand Manufacturers' Federation. 31r Pryor said that he wanted inserted the following addition to the apprentices' clause:-—"Not-withstanding anything herein contained, tho present custom regarding tho employment of boys at heel building shall continue." Mr McKihlay, on behalf of a largo number of employers in the Dominion, said that ho wished to enter a protest against the proposed addition. ; The Court decided to make the award as agreed on. Under tho new . nward, so far as tho male workers are concerned, tho preference clause remains as at present. It is provided that the award shall npph-** to hot wax thread machinists in addition to.those already covered by it. In connection with tho permits for work at homo, applications shall be referred to a representative of the Boot. Manufacturers' Association and a.reprcsontativo of the Union, nnd in tho event of their not agreeing, the decision of the Inspector of Awards shall bo final.

In the old award wages for firstgrade men wero ls OJd an hour. In the new award the minimum rate of wages is fixed at ls 2d an hour. The Court's nsual Under-rate Workers' Clause is inserted in place of the more restricted clause which appeared in the old award, which is in accordance with tho requirements of the Act. Apprentices get a slight increase in •■ wages, and hoys other than apprentices are/now allowed to work at'cementing channels and bottoms. So far as female workers ar© concerned, the undor-rato workers' clause is tho same as the above. Apprentices havo been done away with, and assistants aro provided for. > Tbo employer has now the risht to dismiss s.rioh. assistants at any time on giving 6 hours' notice, and to deduct wages for time lost through illness, or through the default of the worker, or throus-h the factory being closed down for cleaning, or for tho repairing of machinery.
