BOROUGH COUNCILS,
SUMNER.
Tho fortnightly meeting of the Sumner Borough Council was held on Tuesday «vei:in_. Present —The Mayor (Mr 11. J. .Alarriuer), Crs. Brewer, Boultoii, Smithson, Wood, Lawrence and Lill. The Works Committee recommended as lollows:—- ''That a concrete culvert. Bft wide, with a. concrete bottom and timber top, be built across Colenso street. That notices be sent to a number of ratepayers to cut fences, clear sections, etc. That the repairing of Clifton reservoir be put in hand as scon as possible. That the application from the Public Works Department for a connection with tho Hall gas plant for lighiug the new post office be granted. That the application .of the local Fire Brigade for the use of the Town Hall for May 17th be granted, free of cost. That Mr Sinies's offer to sell li acresadjoining the gasworks site receive favourable consideration." The offer was accepted. It wii*. decided, on the recommendation of the -AVorks Committee, to proceed with the work of putting the pound in order, also to appoint a ranger for the horoiiijh. and to erect a fire bell at .Itcdt'ltfr'f*.--• "■- The Mayor reported that he had arranged for the opening of the Coronation Bathhouse at 3" p.m. on April 13th. The Hon". G. Laurenson wrote stating his will'ngne.ss to open the baths on that date. Air Ford wrote forwarding the plans of the buildings for the gasworks for tho Council's approval. The matter was left in the hand*' of tho Town Clerk. It was decided to have a foundation stone of granite. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote stating that the sum of £2."50, Coronation subsidy, had been passed for payment.
A letter was received from a borough resident, drawing the attention of tho Council to the proposal of the Tramway Board to raise the fares to Sumner in order to cover the losses on other lines. It was decided that no opinion could be expressed by the Council at present, as the matter had not vet lieen finally settled. ■ ..' '
A deputation from the Sumner Beautifying Association -waited on the Council with rc-ard to several matters affecting the beauty of the borough. Itwas decided to do all in its power to forward the aims of the Association.
