NURSERYMEN'S CONFERENCE

-. (PRESS ASSOCIATION IELECrtAM '. AUCKLAND, April 10. The fifth annual meeting of the New Zealand Association of Nurserymen (Incorporated) wa.s opened in .~nd this morning.

The President, in his address, mentioned that at the end of 1900 and 1910 the membership was just over 20, in 1.910-11 it had increased to 30, and for tho year just ended it embracing nearly all the leading firms in tho North and South Islands. Mr Lipiatt said that oversea, competition at rates that precluded the possibility of Dominion nurserymen competing and paying a living wage, still prevailed, especially in the south- An endeavour was being made to get an understanding amongst the trade as to tho best varieties of fruits to work up in quantity, with recommendations as to locality. The annual report submitted by the executive committee stated that items for future consideration would include: —(a) Watching the trend of intended legislation; (b) tho question of the best and most profitable varieties of fruit to grow ; (c) improved trade methods; (d) a standard and uniform price for equal values in trees nnd plants. Messrs Horton (Hastings) and Waugh (Wellington) expressed satisfaction with, the state of affairs disclosed by tho annual report. Office-bearers for the ensuing year wero elected as follows:—President, Mr A. McDonald (Epsom): vice-presi-dents. Mr J. Johnston (Ponsonb.v); hon. secretary. Mr G. A. Green (Rerr.nera); auditor, Mr W. AA". Gliddon Richardson; executive committee, .Messrs G. A. Hay, F. W. Booth. G. J. Mneka.v. F- Rennett and W. W. Gliddon Richardson.
