The Court-house was crowded to-day when the. victims of yesterday's "police raid on alleged gambling shops were brought, before the Magistrate. -Air F. V. Frazer. S.AL, was on the Bench. When the first of the cases was called, Sub-inspector Hendry intimated that he would apply for all the charges to be adjourned until, April 18th. and the Magistrate granted the application. Bail was fixed in iho case of the prineipais at £200, and sureties of £100 each, and in the case ol those -who hint visited the premises at £10. The police have not confined their efforts solely to raiding alleged gaming houses. For some weeks past, it is understood, tliey have been engaged in seeking evidence with the object of proceeding against bookmakers in the city. It is well known that mere are people hero.who are still plying the bookmaker's calling, but the great difficulty in putting a stop to illegal betting has lieen the obtaining of sufficient evidence to secure convictions. It is now asserted that the police ha vi».dragged nearly all, if not all, of the bookmakers operating in the city into their lhet. and have gathered sufficient evidence to warrant them in' taking proceedings against a number of alleged bookmakers. Theso will bp-proceeded against by. summons.
