THE PANAMA CANAL.
TO THE T.DITOK OF "THE TRESS."
Sir.—Will you bo good enough to explain the cablegram that appears in "Tho Press" to-day (18th March) which states, "that an amendment was agreed to in the House of Representatives barring all railroad-owned ships, engaged in tho coastwise trade from using tho Panama Canal. .Railroads which absorb water lines are also barred." Why is this?— Yours, etc. ENQUIRER. [The explanation appears to be the fear that the railway companies
may benefit by the Canal at jlio expense of tin , pconle. Tho traffic between the Eastern and Western States is now in their hands, and they are accused of ntferinc shipping: subsides lest carriage by sea interfere with their monopoly. Tho Canal will, it i≤ expected,- create a. great .sea trade between the two sea boards, and it is evidently feared that if 1.0 restrictions aro imposed, the powerful railroad interests may gain control of- the shipping that uses tho Canal.—Ed. 'The Press."]
