THE FARMERS , UNION AND MR RUDD.

TO THE EIUTO* OY "THE TRESS." Sir.—ln a report <:i a luwtiug ot t't.o Oxford branch <>t" the Farmers' Union, which appeared in Thursday's :s«;r>. is the following : —'In reference to a totter from the Provincial Executive, relative to Mr (IVO. Kudd'and hi- -iot\w i?t roecuinir a boy irom drowning in tho Ashley river, it was unanimously .1 rr*.v-d 'that, whilst recognising the courageous manner in which Mr Rudd acted. I c would not approve or this branch canvassing for any roc-ojinition ol -is bravery, as suggested by tin , <"'ust branch.' "' This is not only uisjiut to Mr Rudd, but also misrepresents the part my committee took in the matter. x\t one ot our meetings it \\;>s reported tlwt Mr Rudd had, at great- personal risk, .sr.ved a boy from drowning in the Vshlcy river, and that it had not hivr. recognised in any way. I was therefore requested to write to the Provincial Executive, asking that enquiries should be made with a view of bringing the matter before the Humane Society. Since, however, the Oxford Committee have decided that Mr Rudd's "courageous" action is notworthy of recognition, the Humane Society might consider themselves "squashed," and take no further notice of it. 1 am well aware that Mr Rudd would treat any , "canvassing" with the same contempt that my committee would, but surely iiny individual who risks his life to save, a fellowcreature is worthy of his country's gratitude.—Yours, etc.. H. J. HORRELL. President Cust and "W. Eyreton branch Farmers" Union. Horrellville, 16th March.
