(special to "the tress"),

HOKITIKA, March 18

Much was made during the recent election of the Government's promise of £5000 for the extension of the Ross railway to Mikoniii, and the good news was blazoned forth in every quarter of South Weslland, hut like a good many other promises of the Government, the one for the Ross railway extension still stands unredeemed. At the last meeting of the Ross Borough Council it was decided to "again telegraph to the member for the district, asking what was being done." A few days Defore the last election a party of surveyors wont down to Ross, and it was publicly announced that they had been instructed to see about arranging for the expenditure of tho promised £5000. Everybody in the neighbourhood was overjoyed, but the Government had served its purposes, and a day or two nfter the election the surveyors were recalled to Christchurch, and another "promise" was added to the long list. Tho surveyors havo not been seen in the district since, and those who place any reliance on the Government's promises are beginning to get troubled, for the 31st of March approaches and nothing has been' done. Slowly the people of Westland are beginning to see through the whole farce.
