(Before Captain R. Hatchwell, J. P., and Mr C. Fcrricr, J.P.). DRUNKENNESS. A first offender, on remand, pleaded Euilty to a charge of having been helplessly drunk on the wharf on March Bth. Accused was convicted and ordered to pay medical excuses, 17s fid. IHSCHARGETX James Smith, on remand from Gisbornc, was charged with having on 'March 7th, stolen coat valued at £'3, the- property of "Walter Henderson. Accused, -who pleaded not guilty, said lie had been visiting a friend on board tho Canopus, and when ho left shortly boforo midnight, Henderson lent him tho overcoat. He did not steal it. Detective Carney said that Smith, had been a fireman on tho lonic for a number of voyages, and boro an excellent character. Tho Bench held that there was considerable doubt as to tvhether Smith had taken the cont without permission, and in view of his .uorxl-character, lie would bo discharged without a conviction.
