TROTTING CLUBS' PERMITS.
LOCAL PROTESTS,
A deputation consisting of tho Hon. C. Louis£on, iI.L.C. (N.Z. Metropolitan Trotting Club), Messrs C. S. Howell and F. Beverloy (Canterbury i J ark Club), and E. A. Archer and F. T. Pannell (New Brighton Club) waited on the Hon. D. Buddo yesterday to protest against the unfair way the clubs mentioned were treated by the Racing Counnissioners in respect to the reduction of days upon which permits will be issued to them.
Tho Hon. C. Louisson stated, that of the eleven days taken from trotting eight had been deducted from the threo clubs represented and from the Aehburton Club. This was considered unfair seeing that Canterbury was tho homo of trotting in tho Dominion. Ho advanced several arguments why the matter should bo reconsidered.
Messrs Howell and Archer spoke on behalf of their respective clubs. Mr Pannell urßod that no further reductions ehou!d bo mad© in the number of permits to trotting clubs in the Dominion.
Tho Hon. D. Buddo, in replying said ho wished to frankly admit that he had a strong feeling in favour of the trotting horse because of its iiF<?fuln<?ss to farmers and that ho recognised that tome of the beat sport was witnessed on tho trotting track. He looked upon tho deputation as a protest. As they were aware he was, practically, not in a position to help them, tho Commission having act up in accordance with a resolution of Parliament. Tho Minister pointed out that the complaint \vae that meetings ■R-ero spread over a. long period, into a fortnight's carnival instead 'of a week's. Employers thought this too long as eomo of their ■emoloyees expected-to have a holiday to attend the meeting.
