RANGIORA.
At the weekly meeting of the Bangiora Literary and Debating Society on Monday evening, Messrs R. J. Thompson, G. J. Leech ar.d S. A. Clark, -wero deputed to represent tho Society in an inter-club debate -with the Oxford Society to-morrow evening. It was agreed to meet the Lyttelton Society in j&o----bate at Rangiora on Wednesday, August 9th, the subject being, "Which has had the greater influence for good on tbe British Empire: the statesman or the soldier?" An interesting debate was held on the question, "Is universal military service desirable?" Messrs T. R. Cresswell, Ball, and Cormody being tho principal speakers in the affirmative, and Messrs S. A. Clark, G. J. Leech and J. W. Sinclair in the negative. On Sunday evening, at the Rangiora Presbyterian Church, the Rev. T. Miller preached a special sermon on. the occasion of the members of the Loyal Orange Lodge attending to celebrate the "Twelfth of July" anniversary. There was a large attendance, and the text was taken from St. Paul's injunction to the Galatians: "Stand fast inythe liberty wherewith Christ has made us free."
